Ingersoll Rand Announces Student Participants for 2010 Sustainability Institute


Davidson, N.C., July 7, 2010 – Ingersoll Rand has announced this year’s participants in its second annual Sustainability Institute, which will be held July 12 – 16. Ingersoll Rand accepted applications from high school students throughout the Charlotte area.

This year’s participants are:

  • James East, Forestview High School
  • Emily Elliott, South Mecklenburg High School
  • Michael Hedrick, West Iredell High School
  • Sasha Howes, Myers Park High School
  • Hannah Masten, Myers Park High School
  • Matthew Pless, Northwest Cabarrus High School
  • Pooja Ravindran, North Mecklenburg High School
  • Jennifer Surane, Hopewell High School
  • Alex Walden, Myers Park High School
“We are very excited about the bright minds participating in the program this year,” says Holly Emerson, senior analyst for Ingersoll Rand’s Center for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability. “These students will have the opportunity to learn the importance of economic, social and environmental responsibility in the business world from industry experts.”

During the weeklong residential program, students will learn how businesses balance the demands of economic, environmental and social performance drivers, known as the triple bottom line. Among other activities, participants will tour a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified facility featuring a rooftop photovoltaic system, and participate in a learning session with Burt’s Bees’ Steve Walker, manager of environmental sustainability.

The Sustainability Institute emphasizes leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, effective communication, and independent research through roundtable discussions, group projects and field trips.
