Hendrick Construction Receives Building STAR Award

Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 22, 2008 … Hendrick Construction, Inc. received the prestigious Building STAR award for safety today from the North Carolina Department of Labor.

The designation, which is part of the state Occupational Safety and Health Division’s Carolina STAR program, recognizes construction companies with exceptional safety programs that strive for accident-free work sites. Hendrick Construction received the award for its work on the 81,000-square-foot Mecklenburg County Jail-North Annex.

Hendrick Construction is the third Charlotte-based company to receive the Building STAR award since the program was created in 1994.

North Carolina Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry presented the award during a ceremony at the jail facility. Hendrick is scheduled to complete a substantial portion of the project in October.

The Carolina STAR program is a cooperative relationship between Hendrick management, employees and the Occupational Safety and Health Division. It is designed to promote effective safety and health management plans at North Carolina work sites. The Building STAR designation recognizes construction work sites that have Carolina STAR quality but require a different approach to health and safety from industrial sites.

Hendrick began constructing the Mecklenburg County Jail-North Annex in March. The facility includes three “sprung” structures. Two of the structures total 46,000 square feet, and they will be complete in October and operational in January.

The third – an additional 35,000-square-foot dormitory – will be up-fitted at a later time. The annex will primarily house low- to medium-security inmates.
