Reid's Fine Foods Turns 80
Charlotte, N.C., May 2, 2008 … Reid’s Fine Foods, a Charlotte institution, is celebrating its 80th birthday and its 10th year at its Uptown Seventh Street Station location.
To commemorate this event, Reid’s is giving away prizes and offering great discounts on various items from May 10 to May 31. Reid’s will have weekly prize drawings, and the grand prize drawing on May 31 will be for a high-definition television.
“We’re proud of the longevity and success Reid’s has had in Charlotte,” said owner Chuck Richards. “We want to celebrate this historic event with our customers – some of whom have been shopping at Reid’s for decades.”
The kickoff celebration will be May 10, which coincides with the start of the Center City Green Market – an Uptown tradition across from Seventh Street Station that features fresh produce, fish and flowers, as well as handmade crafts. The Green Market is open Saturdays from May 10 to September 6.
Throughout May, Reid’s will surprise customers with free giveaways of specialty products and offer extended discounts of selected items. Each Saturday, Reid’s will have a prize drawing for a special product, such as a Reid’s gift basket or Wine Club membership.
Reid’s was founded in 1928 by J. Arthur Reid. The original location was on Morehead Street, but the store moved in 1931 to Providence Road. Richards joined Reid’s in 1961 as a junior stock clerk. He purchased the store from Leroy Morrison – the nephew of J. Arthur Reid – in 1984.
When Reid’s returned to Uptown in 1998, it was the first grocery store to open in the Center City in decades.
“Uptown has changed so much since we opened at Seventh Street Station,” Richards said. “We’re excited to watch it grow, and we’re planning to stay here for at least another 80 years.”
Easily accessible by the LYNX light-rail, Reid’s is open at Seventh Street Station Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free parking for Reid’s customers is available in the Seventh Street Station parking deck.
