Hood Hargett Breakfast Club Raises $22,000 for Scholarships

Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 3, 2009 … Members of Hood Hargett Breakfast Club contributed $22,000 to the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund, which helps a select group of local high school student athletes pay for college.

The money was raised during a recent auction where Hood Hargett Breakfast Club members bid on goods and services that had been donated by other members.

“We are so grateful for the money we were able to raise for the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund,” said Jenn Snyder, executive director of Hood Hargett Breakfast Club. “Our scholarship recipients are exceptional students and very talented athletes who are going to inspire us all with their accomplishments.”

The Liz Murray Scholarship Fund was established by Hood Hargett Breakfast Club to help Charlotte-area students pay for college. The scholarship is named in honor of Liz Murray, whose inspirational journey took her from a childhood of homelessness on the streets of New York to earning a full scholarship at Harvard University.

At its monthly breakfast meeting during the school year, the Breakfast Club awards a $1,000 scholarship to a student athlete. From the nine monthly winners, the student athlete of the year is selected and awarded an additional $5,000.

As the 2009-10 school year draws closer, Hood Hargett Breakfast Club is encouraging the community to nominate students. Nominations can come from several sources, including coaches, teachers, principals, community leaders and business executives. Winners are determined by a committee of business owners who are not Breakfast Club members.

The first scholarship of the 2009-10 school year will be awarded Sept. 11 during the Hood Hargett Breakfast Club’s monthly meeting at Carmel County Club.
