World-Renowned Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson to Speak at Hood Hargett Breakfast Club

Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 26, 2009 … World-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson will be the featured speaker at the next meeting of Hood Hargett Breakfast Club – Charlotte’s premier networking group. The event, sponsored by Carolinas Medical Center, will be held at Carmel Country Club Friday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 a.m.

As director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Carson is a medical pioneer. His career highlights include the first separation of conjoined twins whose skulls were fused at the back of their heads. Last year, Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S.

His journey from a troubled childhood, marked by poverty, poor grades and low self-esteem, to his career as a preeminent physician inspired the 2009 movie Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr.

“Dr. Carson is a remarkable physician with a truly wonderful story,” said Jenn Snyder, executive director of Hood Hargett Breakfast Club. “We expect a great turnout for our first meeting of the fall.”

More than 40 local and regional businesses are members of Hood Hargett Breakfast Club. The monthly breakfast events provide an opportunity for members to network with each other and entertain clients and prospective clients.

At each event, a local student athlete is awarded a $1,000 scholarship as part of the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund. Hood Hargett Breakfast Club has awarded more than $180,000 to more than 150 local high school students.
